Your eSIM gave up four blocks ago and the restaurant Wi-Fi is, of course, captive-portal locked. You raise the iPhone, point it at the menu, and the only question that matters is: does this app actually work right now, or are you about to point at a random row and hope.

Camera-based menu translation is the highest-value translation moment of any trip. It’s also where most apps quietly disappoint — not because the text can’t be read, but because what you get back is a wall of overlaid words instead of a menu.   • Hand-lettered specials. The chalkboard and the brushed-ink board are genuinely hard for any recognition system — including the best on-device ones. An honest guide says so, and gives you the fallback.
  • You usually have no signal. The restaurant is a basement, a courtyard, or just outside coverage. The cloud fallback the app advertises is unavailable in the exact moment you need it.

The at-the-table workflow

  • Curved and folded menus. Flatten what you can; severe perspective distortion is the biggest recognition killer. Photograph section by section rather than the whole spread at an angle.
  • Hand-lettered chalkboards and brushed calligraphy. This is the hard case for every recognition system, on-device or cloud. Get physically closer, photograph straight-on, and expect partial results — then fall back to asking: point at the line and use voice translation to ask “what is this dish?”
  • Menu boards behind the counter. Use the camera’s optical zoom to capture a still first, then run Menu Mode on the photo. Live pointing won’t focus at distance; a zoomed still will.
  • Picture menus with no text. Sometimes the answer isn’t translation — it’s pointing plus a spoken question through Conversation Mode.
